Walking with friends on a beautiful winter day

What a fun morning we had birding Merrimac Farm on Sunday.  We covered only the upland area and saw 26 species as well as many animal tracks, including a fox.

Highlights included six of the seven woodpeckers found in this area during winter –  including a Red-headed Woodpecker – a Barred Owl, and a Kestral. Several large flocks of Canada Geese flew overhead while Robins, White-throated Sparrows and Juncos foraged on the ground for scarce seeds, grubs and other tasty tidbits.

The sun was shining, showing the snow covered fields at their best.  As you can see in the photo, the pond is still frozen with the thaw beginning from the shallow side that borders a wetland. Perhaps most exciting of all, we saw that tree buds are growing large, getting ready to burst into a beautiful spring… I can’t wait!

After weeks of snow and cold, it was nice to be out and about with friends, enjoying the splendor of nature at Merrimac Farm on a beautiful winter morning.
